Single Parenthood Platform

#Building homes and families that not only survive but thrive

Single parenthood, especially among women, has become a pandemic. Stats SA estimates that over 70% of black children in South Africa are raised by single parents, especially female single parents. Recently, I (Mbulelo Conversations) had the privilege of discussing with single mothers, and I was overwhelmed by the trauma they showed coming from the pressures of being single parents. Contemporary false narratives fed to society portray women as a “strong species” that can withstand anything. There are constant narratives that talk about “strong black women,” although I have not heard of those that talk about “strong white women.” It is important to note that single fathers also require support.

Objective of the platform

The objective of this platform is to act a sounding board for single parents that are overwhelmed and would like to pour out their traumas for possible support and guidance from other single parents. From time to time experts on various matters related to single parenthood will interact with the platform. It our hope that this platform will end up being of value not only to parent subscribers but also to children thy are raising and by extension the society that the children are growing in and into.

Tools that will be used by the platform

  • Two 1 hour monthly zoom online sessions covering various aspects. These sessions will mostly not be curated sessions for authenticity purposes. During the session participants, will be asked to raise matters that they are struggling with and request advice or support on from everyone participating. The format might change based on subscriber feedback.
  • Single parent WhatsApp group where single parents can continually engage on various matters and get support and feedback from other parents
  • Media links. These will be videos that will be on the media side of the website that single parents can access at their leisure
  • One on one sessions that single parents can book where they have special attention to deal with specific issues including coaching and problem solving.

Admission to the platform

  • Monthly subscription of R400 which allows you access to:
    • Two online zoom sessions,
    • 24 hour access to the what’s up group and
    • Unlimited access to the media section of the website
